Collecting brains

Many brains were examined

Brains from 9479 patients were examined during the 37 years of activity of the Insitute of Brain Pathology.

The Danish state mental hospitals

The brains examined at the institute came from patients who died and underwent autopsy at the state mental hospitals.

Despite being the largest and oldest psychiatric hospital in Denmark, Sct. Hans Hospital was not a state mental hospital and hence did not send brains to the institute for examination.

The majority of the brains came from the large and old state mental hospitals. The more recently established psychiatric hospitals only sent few brains to the institute for examination.

Distribution of diagnoses

Based on preliminary numbers. An exact registration of the 9479 brains is currently ongoing.

Age distribution for the examined patients

The majority of the examined patients died old, some after many years of hospitalisation in a psychiatric hospital.

The lower plot was calculated to give an impression of the age of potential next of kin alive today.
